Plant erect and spreding, to 1 m tall, the many stem not branched, pendulous, bearing many leaves, fleshy,terete but flatterned a little near the apex. Leaves spreading, lanceolate to strap-shape, long-acute, narrowed basally, globrous, fleshy and though in texture, 5.5-12 cm long by 6-10 mm abroad below middle. inflorescences lateral,short and usually with two flowers, with about 5 spreading. red floral bracts at the base which are shorter than the ovary. 
  • Flower large for the section but not opening widely, white with some yellow on the sepals;
  • dorsal sepal oblong and obtuse, about 2 cm, about 2 cm long by 8 mm broad;
  • lateral sepal falcate-triangular, obtuse, 1.9 cm long, broadened at the base to form a very obtuse mentum which is 1.2 cm long;
  • petals obovate, truncate and apiculate, 1.9 cm long;
  • lips short, almost kidney-shaped at the base, trilobed in the middle, glabrous, the side lobes erect and almost semi-circular, the mid-lobe much smaller and shortly bilobed, with a keel from the lip base to half-way along  the mid-lobe and a shorter one running parallel on either side, the lip in all 1.1 cm long by 1.5 cm  broad across the side lobes, the mid-lobe 5 mm;
  • column thick and 7 mm long, there is a curious callus on the column foot which is covered with orange, club-shaped papillae.

  • "This species has been called E .rigida BL. in most accounts, Lindley's earlier naming having been overlooked until noted by Seidenfaden &J.J Wood in "The orchids of Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore" ( 1992 ). Schlechter noted that his E. rhodobractea differed from E. rigida in the lip, but this didifference has not been upheld by subsequent authors" ( Orchid of Sumatra, JB.Comber)
